Amin Merali came from a humble background and had to fight the odds to make it through life.
Through hard work, his parents took him to school in Britain at the age of 13yrs!! you can imagine that small boy.
All alone in a foreign land he made friends with a handicapped boy whose parents owned a hotel. This was his introduction to hotels and he loved the experience. In 1963, during Kenya’s independence, His parents called him back to Kenya. They could not afford his school fees any more, financial constraints forced him to drop out of school.Yes, you read right Amin Merali did not clear school. At this point he quotes ‘business is pure common sense, you do not go to school to acquire them’ true that.
He never wasted the crisis, but made it an opportunity to venture into business…his father’s business as an assistant. How has he made it this far?
He had a goal. He wanted to succeed in life and to touch as many lives as possible. He firmly believes in sharing resources. He calls it entrepreneurship with a balance.
They run an orphanage with 40 children providing them with all the basic things that costs them 5 million annually.
His keys to succeeding in business are among others :
- Hard work and determination
- Anticipate change and take appropriate action
- Integrity and Credibility
- Invest in human capital
- Leadership and teamwork
- passion and commitment to your goals
He also emphasised on building positive relationships with the people who work for us and with us. Acknowledging every effort they make and motivate them.
He warned against falling for quick money. Do not be a deal maker.
- Build a venture that will outlast you. The things you do for yourself and your family die with you, but every little thing you do for someone else will live forever.
He advice that one should always have a personal mission statement…your driving force.
We are very grateful for such a thought provoking presentation. Big up Mr. Merali.
